Physical and chemical properties

2. Flavor and sweetness

The unique flavor is refreshing and refreshing, with a sweetness of about 60% of the same concentration of sucrose.

3. Solubility and viscosity

Sorbitol Powder  is highly soluble in water and slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol, and acetic acid. At 20 ℃, its solubility is 220g/100mL of water, while sucrose is only 195g/100mL of water. Due to its high solubility in water, it is not easily crystallized in industrial production. Under the same conditions, its viscosity aqueous solution is slightly lower than that of sucrose.

4. Moisture absorption and moisturizing properties

1. Daily chemical industry

Production methods

The production of Sorbitol Powder in China mostly adopts the method of continuous or intermittent hydrogenation of refined glucose obtained from starch saccharification under medium pressure:

C6H12O6+H2 [Ni] → C6H14O6

Add 53% glucose aqueous solution and 0.1% nickel catalyst (for glucose) to a high-pressure vessel, replace the air, and hydrogenation is carried out under conditions of approximately 3.5 MPa, 150 ℃, and pH values of 8.2-8.4. The residual sugar at the endpoint is controlled below 0.5%. After 5 minutes of precipitation, refine the sorbitol solution ion exchange resin to obtain the product. The above process flow is simple, and qualified products can be obtained without separation, and there is no "three wastes" pollution. However, for starch, the yield is only 50%, so the cost is relatively high. If a new process of direct hydrogenation of starch saccharification solution is adopted, the yield can reach 85%.
